I love creating stories through art about meaningful environments. The homes, city streets, and country vistas that are our living places are anchors for our daily lives, vividly detailed in our psyche, and rich memories to pass on through story and generations.
Commissioned "House Portraits" capture the details as well as the overall atmosphere of our special places. A single piece or a series of originals all based on the same place will become a daily pleasure and a family heirloom - not to mention a conversation piece!

Media: Options include watercolor with pen & ink painting, simple black-and-white line drawing, monotype print, or mixed media.
Process: We start with a discussion about your home and the kinds of details, atmosphere, and style that are important to you. Drawing from life is preferable if possible, but if necessary I can work from photographs. I will send you a detailed pencil sketch for approval, and will complete the full work by an agreed-upon delivery date.
Scale: Any size is possible! Small 5"x5" pieces to 14"x18" pieces are typical.
Series: Multiple pieces in a series based on your home extend the novelty of a house portrait -- for instance to give many family members at a reunion or memorial. Here there are at least two options:
- A limited print edition of very high quality archival art prints that identically reproduce a single color painting. For these editions, I work with a high quality art print studio in Boston's South End.
- A limited painting edition of multiple unique paintings based on the same image. The black & white drawing is printed in multimples on watercolor paper, and each is painted individually with a slightly different color palette or highlight on special detail. Each person gets a uniquely customized original, connected to a "family" of work based on the image of your home.
Pricing: Size, detail, color, and number of items in a series are the major factors that determine the time involved in creating your piece, and thus its cost. Beyond the basic pricing indicated below, a rate of $50/hour is added or subtracted based on the elements you request in terms of size, detail, color, and number in a series.

Time: From original contact to delivery of the finished work will take 2-8 weeks, depending on the season.
Delivery: In the Boston area, delivery can be accomplished in person; otherwise, secure delivery is done by postal mail or specific arrangement.
